Setting objectives for 2007
I think I stopped making resolutions back in 1984 (the last one was something to do with more homework less boyfriends). So I tend to think that resolutions are just for teenagers and people who can't give up smoking. However, I do believe that New Year is a time to consider personal and business objectives.
Christmas, for me, is about family and friends. I love receiving Christmas cards from old friends. I especially love those "round robin" typed notes people put in Christmas cards updating you with news. Even if I don't know who Aunt Freeda is I'm still intrigued to hear about her trip to Prague to get her eyes done. So, this New Year my personal objective is to maintain better contact with friends by phone, email and post.
As I was thinking about this I realised that it's also become a business objective for me. Last year we re-launched the networking events (next one in Feb/March I hope) and through the event, social networking sites (LinkedIn, OpenBC, etc) and the blogosphere (I'm particularly thinking of people like Jim Stroud in the US) I've made lots of new business contacts.
Additionally, there is my existing network of contacts. For a start we send the newsletter to around 14,000 subscribers. Plus there are networking event contacts from events as far back as 2002, clients who I've worked with since the start of UK Recruiter, ex-colleagues and business buddies.
One of my main objectives for 2007 is to work at strengthening that network; to maintain regular contact with as many people as possible, to offer help when I can, to facilitate introductions to aid others and maybe to call in a few favours when I need them.
Well, as my cheesy "quote a day" desk calendar says, "No man is an Island".
