Very exclusive networking
I'd been chatting with a researcher I know about using LinkedIn and Viadeo for sourcing potential candidates. She mentioned a social networking community that's she part of called aSmallWorld.
Being a social networking junkie I thought I'd take a look. However, it's an invitation only site (and she didn't invite me!). So this is what I found out... It was set up in 2004 by a chap called Erik Wachtmeister (who I think looks like Roger Moore) for "like-minded individuals". Members are what you'd call "elite", they are entrepreneurs, business leaders, actors, models and sports stars. However, the only examples I can give you (as they are the only two famous members I've heard quoted) are Naomi Campbell and Paris Hilton.
The site has discussion forums, but topics seem to cover such subjects as "where can I buy a massive diamond ring in Vegas" or "would you like to rent my villa in Tuscany".
Whilst I'm sure lots of recruiters have a villa in Tuscany that they'd like to rent to Paris Hilton, I suspect the site has a business use for recruiters too. It could work for high level networking; if you have clients who are members if would be a good way to maintain a subtle touch with them. However, you've got to find an associate who is a member and who is willing to invite you. If, like me, you don't get an invite its time to realise that when it comes to rubbing virtual shoulders with Naomi or Paris it's less "small world" and more "fat chance".
