Interview with a blogger - Michelle Flynn

Intv_michelleMichelle Flynn is the Internal Recruitment Manager at Conchango; a Technical Service Delivery Consultancy and Full Service Web Agency.  She has over 10 years recruitment experience of which 8 years were spent working for a recruitment consultancy before she crossed over to the other side of the fence to work internally, and has not looked back since (and cannot believe she did not do it sooner).  Apparently her blogging ambition is to beat Jamie Thomson as Conchango’s top blogger.

How long have  you been blogging?
I started blogging in October 2006

Why did you start?
I thought why should it just be the Consultants at Conchango who blog???  I wanted to give people another view of what it is like to work here.  Also considering Conchango is a Technical Delivery Consultancy and we have a very successful blog site it just seemed wrong not to blog.

What do you do, work related, when you aren't blogging?
I am the Internal Recruitment Manager responsible for all permanent recruitment for our Technical, Business and Interactive Media teams.  We do not use agencies at all for our permanent recruitment which has proved to be a massive success in terms of both cost cutting and time saving.

Do you think blogging has helped your business?
Blogging has helped my role in so many ways from the obvious one of blogging about the roles we currently have live to blogging about our induction so new starters can have a read and know all about what to expect on their 1st day with us.  It has also given people a good insight into what it is like to work for us from the social side to our community days, the charity events we run to our training and career progression.

What do you feel is the biggest challenge about writing a blog?
The biggest challenge is coming up with a topic that people will actually want to read about.  It is easy to waffle about irrelevant rubbish so always ask myself is anyone actually going to care about what I blog about.  Also I sometimes find it hard to make sure what I am blogging about is work related and remember to use Facebook if I want to chat about non work related subjects.

What's another blog that you read and why do you recommend it?
I don’t have one specific blog I read on an ongoing basis, I am always on the lookout for new blogs from people who we may be interested in employing.

What do you want your reader’s to know about you?
I want my readers to know that I am the Internal Recruitment Manager and that I do not use agencies, as I know people try to avoid agencies like the plague, and that I love my job and think Conchango is a great place to work and people should come and join us.

If you knew someone was thinking about starting a recruitment related blog, what advice would you want to give them?
My best piece of advice when writing a blog is be yourself and blog when you want to, not when you feel you have to.

Is there a question you wished I asked you?
I wish you had asked me why should people come and join Conchango as it would have been so much easier to answer than some of your questions
