If you're getting miffed at the amount of applicants you have to screen for each job in the current market think of those poor chaps over at Tourism Queensland. They ended up with 35,000 candidates!
If you missed the story : "Tourism Queensland is searching the globe for candidates for what it describes as the "Best Job in the World" - an AUD$150,000 six-month contract for the role of Island Caretaker based on a Great Barrier Reef island."
The recruitment campaign was run rather like a reality TV show (in fact I wonder why it wasn't filmed as a reality TV show), with a top 50 shortlisted applicants being whittled down to 16 and from there just one "winner" announced.
The final winner was Ben Southall from the UK and you can read his blog here: http://afritrexben.blogspot.com/.
Apparently the recruitment campaign was just the start of a three year project to increase the levels of tourism to the area. Part of Ben's job is to blog about the Islands and to engage media activity as part of this campaign.
And I avoid advertising junior admin roles due to the massive, unmanageable response! Good luck to Ben, not bad going, 35000 people down to 1 lucky winner.
