Are bloggers an untapped source of talent?

Sixfigures This short peice came to me from Kelly Magowan who is CEO of Six Figures.

Bloggers and blogging are great. Why – because they are actively out there creating wonderful content (often for no income) about topics they are passionate about. They deliver readers alternative information and perspectives to what you find in mainstream media, which can be known to be biased and self interested!

All this aside, bloggers offer a great source of untapped talent. Why you ask?

    · They are passionate and often write about areas or niches in which they have a vast knowledge base and direct and current expertise
    · They are well networked in their niche, evidence by who they are linked to, who is on their blogroll, who is linking to them and so on
    · If they are regular bloggers they demonstrate commitment, which can be a rare things these days
    · They can communicate information, ideas and concepts and you have tangible evidence of it as you read their blog
    · Not only can they communicate via the written word, often you will also see examples of their analytical skills

When you receive a resume and they have a blog link, open it and view it as an additional recruitment selection tool. Alternatively research and follow bloggers who may be relevant for your business.

So if you are looking to hire committed, passionate people, with great analytical skills and writing skills within a particular profession or niche – look no further than a blogger.

    Here Comes the Boss Blog

Herecomestheboss A couple of people have recently pointed me to posts on this blog site.

One was about how "People change their accents in order to get a job" (sent to me by someone who describes themselves as multilingual as they speak both the "Queens" and "BBC" English!).  The other was pointed out by Dave Leydon and is about how "Nepotism and no-pay stops some grads getting dream jobs".  Both posts are unkind (but funny) analysis of other articles/blog posts.  As Dave points out it "made me laugh and thought it was quite apt with all the recent credit crunch, redundancy and recession panic".

The Here Comes The Boss blog is actually worth a quick peek as some of the stories are ones I'd missed elsewhere.  I try hard (you may not have noticed!) with the images I use next to blog posts - but these guys have some really superb ones.

Winner of Best UK Recruitment Blog of 2008

Medal Thanks to all of you for voting in this year's Best UK Recruitment Blog Awards.  I've now counted up the votes and I am pleased to announce the winner of The Best UK Recruitment Blog of 2008 is the Talent Technology Blog written by Peter Gold.

Peter also won this award last year so it's great to see him retain the "title"!  Spookily he got almost the same percentage of the votes as last year too (24% this year v's 23% last year).

Congratulations to the other finalists who were:

    BLTog
    Digital Recruiting
    Online Media Thoughts
    Online Recruitment: the bigger picture
    Recruitment 2.0

All are well worth a read - as are many others on our list of UK Recruitment Blogs.

    Congratulations again to Peter!

    How people view websites

    Zoe

A recruitment colleague sent me this nice little video from Working Lunch web producer Zoe Kleinman about how people view websites.

For example she states that most people look at websites in the shape on an F (left to right twice and then down the left hand column).  Which must be why I cleverly put the adverts on the UK Recruiter website in that layout!

The video is just two minutes long and worth a look.

PS, Don't forget to vote for the Best UK Recruitment Blogger (background information here).  Voting closes on Friday 9th Jan.
